Boy's U18 Cup Finals Weekend - 25&26 April 2009, University of Birmingham

Southampton squeeze their way to success

A delighted Southampton became champions of the Boy’s U18 Cup in a tense competition where any of the four teams could have taken the title. After day one, it was Langley Park who looked well in control of the league as they comfortably beat Southampton thanks to Penalty Corner specialist Joe Merchant as he scored two of his team’s three goals. The other game on day one saw Old Loughtonians come from two goals down to draw with Stourport.

Sunday began with Southampton making a vast improvement as they overcame Old Loughtonian’s despite an early set back. Stourport then went on to defeat Langley Park 3-1 which meant that three teams were still in the hunt but it was the next game that made the real difference in the competition. Stourport knew that a win would make them champions of the cup but they lost out to a close game with Southampton which included three goals in the last eight minutes. Dave Devey had scored his second goal to draw Stourport level but Southampton’s Rob Tong scored the winner just moments later which but the Hampshire side top much to the delight of the large travelling crowd.

The last game had so much riding on it as Langley Park needed a win to overtake Southampton into top spot but it wasn’t to be as Old Loughtonian’s Harry Kempe scored a hat-trick to lead his side to a 3-1 victory. This concluded the huge turn of events as Southampton were crowned champions after being bottom on day one, with Langley Park finishing bottom after leading on day one when they beat Southampton. One more goal from Old Loughtonian’s in their last game would have put them second but they couldn’t find it so Stourport finished second having scored one more goal than their Essex counterparts.
