Match Report
The final match, of a truly spectacular weekend of hockey at Bowdon, was between City of York and East Grinstead in the Men’s Over 40s Plate. From the start, it looked like a game of many goals, and it was.
East Grinstead opened the scoring late in the first half, with Richard Leman on fire from a penalty corner, stroke cleaning into the bottom left of the goal. He followed this up eight minutes later, this time from open play, as he drove down the right, miss-hitting the ball and fooling the keeper.
East Grinstead also kept the pressure on in the second half, scoring this time from Bram Van Asselt. He pulled the ball back nicely, hitting it into the ground, bouncing nicely into the back of the net. City however bounced back and kept their heads in the game, with a strike at the very top of the circle. The umpires discussed whether it was in or outside of the line resulting in the goal being given.
The Sussex team however remained ruthless, with Richard Leman scoring his hat-trick, again from a penalty corner strike. The defender managed to get a touch this time, but alas the ball still found its way in.
City of York, looked to make a late come back with a fantastic deflection by Karim Ramli, but with only one minute to go, it was too little too late, and East Grinstead’s gutsy performance carried them through to lift the trophy.
