Leicester host arch rivals Reading

Reading coach, team talk-450

LAST season’s champions in the Investec Women’s Hockey League Premier Division, Leicester play host to rivals Reading on Saturday afternoon.

Both sides have suffered in the early part of the season as their international players take a break following a successful Olympic campaign, and they lie sixth and seventh respectively in the table.

“Both ourselves and Leicester are victims of our own success, as more than half the GB team is Reading and the others are mostly from Leicester,” said Reading manager Matt Poulton.

“Both teams haven’t had the start they wanted. We have been able to give new players first team experience which is great, but results have suffered. However for Saturday’s game we will have several players back such as Kate Walsh, Helen Richardson, Emily Maguire and Sam Quek.

“But if you had said to us before the start of the season we would be five games in and only six points off the top, we would’ve taken that, so we’re not concerned.”

Elsewhere in the Investec Women’s Premier Division, leaders Canterbury will be aiming to keep their unbeaten run going when they entertain Clifton. And second-placed Sutton Coldfield go to struggling Olton and West Warwickshire.

Surbiton are also on the road and go to University of Birmingham, while Slough play host to Bowdon Hightown.

In the Investec Women’s Conference North, second-placed University of Durham go to third-placed Brooklands Poynton, while leaders Beeston will entertain Liverpool Sefton as they bid to hold on to top spot.

Investec Women’s Conference East leaders Harleston Magpies will be hoping to keep their unbeaten run going when they go to struggling Chelmsford, while second-placed Ipswich take on bottom of the table Bromley and Beckenham.

With five wins from five matches so far, Buckingham will be aiming to continue their great start to the Investec Women’s Conference West when they play host to Swansea City on Saturday.
