Last year's finalists prepare for re-match

Sam Quek Reading Super Sixes-450

FINALISTS in last season’s Maxifuel Super Sixes Championships, Leicester and Reading are due to meet for the first time in this year’s action-packed women’s tournament at Bromsgrove School on Sunday.

A late goal five minutes from the end meant Leicester beat Reading in last year’s thrilling Maxifuel Super Sixes Championship Final – and all the signs are that their rivalry is set to continue when the 2012/13 competition begins this weekend.

Reading’s formidable line-up includes several experienced players as they bid to take the title – including London 2012 Olympic bronze medallists Kate Walsh, Helen Richardson, Alex Danson and Emily Maguire, as well as other internationally experienced players such as Sam Quek and captain Emma Thomas.

Meanwhile, Leicester’s line-up includes their GB Olympic medal winning team-mates Chloe Rogers and Nicola White, as well as others with international experience such as goalkeeper Maddie Hinch and Katie Long.

With the top four teams progressing to the semi finals in Kettering on 12 January, all sides know the importance of starting well in the high-octane competition. Top spot in last year’s table went to Bowdon Hightown – the 2011 Champions; their bid for glory this time is being led by captain Fay Nash, and includes 2012 Olympian Sally Walton.

“We’re hoping it’ll be third time lucky for us,” said Reading Manager Matt Poulton. “We’ve made it the Wembley two years in a row, and lost on penalty flicks and then by a single goal against different teams each year.

“We’re desperate to win it, and this year we’ve got our strongest squad ever, with our Olympic medallists in the team as well as others with great experience.

“But indoor hockey is a funny game: it’s very fast-paced and you can never write anyone off. We’ve always started slow and never won the league, but still battled into the final. Hopefully our strength in depth will change that.”
