Reading aim to preserve top spot

Reading women 2013-14 450

READING will be looking to hold on to top spot in the Investec Women’s Hockey League Premier Division when they play Sutton Coldfield on Saturday.

Second bottom of the table, Sutton Coldfield secured their first win last weekend, beating rock bottom Olton and West Warwickshire 6-1. But they face a Reading side who have scored the most and conceded the fewest goals so far, and will be a different proposition altogether.

After last weekend’s defeat to Beeston, Canterbury face Leicester as they bid to return to winning ways, while the Midlands side are still searching for consistency.

Bowdon Hightown could go above Clifton if they beat them on Saturday. Clifton have managed to hold on to third place for now, despite having a point deducted for fielding an incorrectly registered player. But Bowdon Hightown will have to be better than they were last weekend when they lost to University of Birmingham 4-0.

That was the first win of the season for the University of Birmingham, and they’ll look to repeat that form against this week’s opponents, Surbiton.

In the other game of the weekend, Olton and West Warwickshire will host Beeston.

It’s a top of the table clash in the Investec Women’s Conference West with unbeaten Buckingham facing second-placed Slough who they lead by three points.

Holcombe are in rampant form at the top of the Investec Women’s Conference East, and will want to add to their five wins from five games when they play Horsham on Saturday.

University of Durham have a slender lead at the top of the Investec Women’s Conference North. Whitley Bay and Tynemouth are just a point behind them but Durham will hope to make some breathing space with a result against Ben Rhydding.
