Quicksticks festival held by Gloucester HC

Quicksticks Festival at Gloucester HC

On Wednesday 26 February Gloucester City HC hosted a Quicksticks festival for 14 local schools, giving them a chance to enjoy hockey in some brief February sunshine and get involved in local sport.

14 schools and 84 primary school pupils took part in the Gloucester City Quicksticks Festival, and the sun was out in spades as St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Kingsholm Primary walked away with first and second place after a fun day of junior hockey.

These two teams will now get to take part in the county finals, taking place at Cheltenham College on Friday 28 March. Even though only two schools could walk away with the prizes, every school really enjoyed the day!

Talking to the School Games Organiser after the event, she said “To see it all come together on the day, 14 schools, 84 primary pupils, 18 young hockey leaders, St. Peter’s staff and facilities and the ever present Gloucester Hockey club was fantastic.

“As a School Games Organiser this is the ideal scenario, encouraging our primary pupils into the sport of hockey, providing leadership opportunities to young coaches and officials and most importantly encouraging these young players into our community club programme.”

These sort of events can provide local clubs with a great opportunity to interact with schools and begin to establish mutually beneficial Club School Links. This is exactly what Brian Mobberley at Gloucester City HC thought when he helped organise the event, “In terms of club recruitment this type of activity I now see as very important to long term club survival. Our junior club has been running for over twenty years, yet it's only in the past few years we have seen the real benefits of running events like this”
