Barking and Dagenham Quicksticks Hockey Festival

Barking and Dagenham Quicksticks Festival - Chloe Rogers 450

11 teams entered the second Barking and Dagenham Quicksticks Hockey Festival on Monday 17 March – a happy result and more than twice the amount who took part the previous year.

Romford Hockey Club was Barking and Deganham's partner for the event and provided three qualified, experienced and very talented coaches (Lee Bennett, Lorraine Farnham and David Pasola). They began with an hour of engaging and fun coaching for more than 80 primary-aged children, after which the event moved on to a competition that gave the children an opportunity to demonstrate the skills they had learned. A format of pool games and a knockout stage enabled everyone to play their part and have a chance to reach the finals.

The great support provided by Romford HC was at the heart of an extremely successful day. Also central to the event was Olympian Chloe Rogers, whose interest in young people, clear passion for the sport and sheer hard work on the day were magnificent. Chloe helped umpire, coach and handed out the medals, as well as giving an inspiring talk on her hockey career so far. She also brought her London 2012 bronze medal and every school was delighted to have their photo taken with her!

School Games Organiser Elaine Burgess said after the event, ‘It's wonderful to have the support of Romford Hockey Club to help deliver our Festival in a borough where hockey struggles for recognition. The willingness and involvement of an established and forward thinking club is very important. We look forward to the competition growing in stature and to building an ever stronger relationship with Romford HC."

Henry Green Primary School emerged as borough champions and will represent Barking and Dagenham at the London School Games on Wednesday 2 April at Crystal Palace.
