Netherlands head into Vitality Hockey Women's World Cup year in top form

Netherlands World League Finals
It has been a year to remember for the Netherlands, winning no fewer than three gold medals and building fantastic momentum as the hockey fraternity's attentions start turning to the Vitality Hockey Women’s World Cup.

The Oranje enjoyed first-placed finishes at the World League Semi-finals, EuroHockey Championships and the World League Finals to show just why they are ranked number one in the world.

They will come up against China, Korea and Italy in Pool A at Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre next summer, all opposition they have faced and beaten this year, and will have their eyes set firmly on hitting the ground running and topping their pool.

Despite a transition within the squad, common at the end of an Olympic cycle, the team still harbour world class talent, none more so than Lidewij Welten. The tall, quick and powerful forward was named the best female player in the world in 2015 and has carried this form on and remains one of the Netherlands’ most entertaining players.

The team are just as strong in defence as they are in attack and have shown tremendous resilience during major tournaments this year. On their way to winning the EuroHockey Championships on home soil in Amsterdam the team conceded just once and in their most recent campaign at the World League Finals went the whole tournament without letting in a single goal.
