Exeter and Loughborough claim 2019 BUCS Championship Titles

Exeter 2019 BUCS Men's Champions
The University of Exeter won their first BUCS Men’s Championship in dramatic style by beating reigning champions Durham University on flicks to cap off a brilliant #BUCSBigWednesday.

In a match that almost perfectly mirrored last year’s final the score at the final whistle was 1-1, although this time it was Durham who had to come from behind to take the game to a shootout at the Nottingham Hockey Centre.

But they couldn’t repeat their heroics of last year as Exeter prevailed 4-2 winners to cap off a sensational campaign that saw them overcome 2018 runners-up Nottingham Trent in the semi-finals and 2017 champions Loughborough in the quarters.

The similarities didn’t end there though as Loughborough’s women retained their BUCS Championship title with a 3-2 win over the University of Birmingham, repeating the scoreline when they beat the University of Nottingham last March.

Having trailed 1-0 early on, goals from Lucy Millington, Beth Peers and Jenni Park were enough to secure the gold medal for Loughborough despite a spirited late comeback from their local rivals.

It wasn’t to be a double for Loughborough though as their women’s 2nd XI as they lost to Nottingham Trent University in the Women’s Trophy final, with goals from Bella Fiskin and Tara Atchinson claiming the title for the local side in front of a partisan crowd.

And in the Men’s Trophy final Cardiff got their revenge on Edinburgh by claiming the silverware with a 3-1 victory after losing to the same side on flicks last year.
