Flyerz Stars Steal The Show In Belgium

England's Flyerz Stars at 2019 EuroParaHockey Championships
“It’s absolutely amazing. I never thought looking back a year ago today I would even hold a hockey stick, let alone run on the pitch.”

These are the words of Tom Kirkby, one of the 22 Flyerz stars who represented the nation – split across England and UK Lions teams – at the 2019 EuroParaHockey Championships in Antwerp.

Tom was also part of the UK Lions side won gold by beating England 2-0 in the ParaHockey Challenge Division final, adding to the trophy won by Midland Mencap when they represented England at the 2017 Euro ParaHockey Championships.

Held between 19-21 August, teams from nine nations took part in three different competitions for players with learning disabilities, with Italy taking the Euro ParaHockey Championship title and hosts Belgium winning the Trophy.

Players from across the country represented England in the two teams as the final day of action took place in between the final women’s group matches at the 2019 EuroHockey Championships on the same pitch.

That meant their games were watched by not just hundreds of spectators but also players and coaches from teams participating in the 2019 EuroHockey Championships, including England's men.

This is just reward for an inspiring group of individuals who continue show that hockey really is a game for everyone.

With Flyerz continuing to grow across the country and more clubs setting up their own sections, Tom also encouraged anyone thinking of taking up the sport to do it and experience the many benefits it brings.

“It’s not about how good you are, how skilled you are – if you’re with friends you make friends and family for life and it’s really worth doing,” he said to Helen Richardson-Walsh after winning gold.

England Hockey would like to thank the individuals and clubs who have worked hard to make this fantastic opportunity possible. We would also like to congratulate all those who represented our country at this year’s Euro ParaHockey Championships.
