Up to 14 England Debutants in Birmingham

England’s squads to face Scotland in two indoor international test matches on Monday night have been announced.

The two games at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham mark the start of a busy international winter indoors, which will culminate in England’s participation in the EuroHockey Indoor Nations Trophy (men) and the EuroHockey Indoor Nations Challenge (women).

With England having only returned to the international indoor arena in late 2007 after eight years away and the outdoor men’s squad still travelling back from the ABN AMRO Champions Trophy in Australia on Monday, men’s Head Coach Andy Halliday will take the opportunity to give up to eight players their first taste of senior international indoor hockey against Scotland.

Nick Clarke, the women’s Head Coach, has also opted to give bring in several new faces, selecting six players who have yet to play for England at senior international indoor level.

England's Ben Hawes at the International Indoor Tri-Nations at Fleming Park, Eastleigh, December 2008Talking about his selection, Clarke also points out the value of some of the more experienced players in the side: “The squad is a nice blend of players with good indoor experience and those that are just beginning their international careers.  Four athletes will be going to Argentina with the senior Great Britain squad two days after the match against Scotland; Sally Walton, Jo Ellis, Susie Gilbert and Chloe Rogers.

“We also have a number of players who contributed much to the indoor programme last year, notably Walton, Ashleigh Ball, goalkeeper Becky Duggan, Jo Ellis, Kerry Williams and Sam Quek.  Sam is one of four players that also did exceptionally well to finish fourth at the Junior World Cup earlier this year so we have a nice blend of experience and youth.”

For Halliday the matches represent an opportunity for players to stake a claim to a regular England place: “The squad we’ve selected shows a blend of youth and plenty of outdoor experience but limited indoor experience, and includes eight uncapped indoor players. This is a great opportunity for some of the fringe players to prove themselves in an international arena and we look forward to the challenge that Scotland, an established indoor side, will present to this group.”

England’s women are first up on Monday night when they take on their Scottish counterparts at 6:45pm before the England and Scotland’s men take to the pitch at 8:00pm.
