EuroHockey Indoor Nations Challenge 2010

Women’s indoor Head Coach Nick Clark has named a strong squad as he looks to get England promoted out of the Challenge division and into the second tier of indoor European competition, the Trophy division.

During their three days of competition in Rouen, France, England’s women will face Wales, France, Sweden, Croatia and Turkey in a round robin event, playing each opponent once.  Two years ago in Sheffield on their return to competitive international indoor hockey, England beat both Turkey and Sweden before losing 3-2 to Denmark in the final, a position that Clarke is keen to improve upon this time around.

“Our aim is to achieve qualification from the Challenge division,” said Clark as he announced his squad.  “It will not be straight forward, particularly playing France in their home venue. We know very little about some of our opponents but we do know that no game will be easy.  The squad has just returned from the friendly WASA Cup event in Copenhagen, defeating Denmark in the final 7-4, and has recently played Scotland five times, achieving three victories.  Both of these teams are currently playing in a higher division.”
.
Speaking about his squad Clark believes that he has a good balance of experience and youth.  “Several of the outdoor squad that recently played for Great Britain in Argentina have rejoined us for the EuroHockey Indoor Nations Challenge,” continued Clark.  “Overall, 20 players have represented England in this year's programme and it has been pleasing to provide a number of the younger athletes with an opportunity during the winter.”

Among the most experienced players in the group are defensive pair Sally Walton and Ashleigh Ball while the Leicester pairing of Kerry Williams and Chloe Rogers will be crucial to England’s plans of sealing promotion.  Rogers missed the four match test series in Paisley before Christmas while away with Great Britain but Williams netted twice over that weekend.  Prior to the series in Scotland, Rogers was inspirational against the Scots in Birmingham at the beginning of December, scoring in a 3-1 English victory.
