Great Britain Super League Details Announced

Great Britain Hockey’s annual talent identification tournament, the Great Britain Super League (GBSL), returns for 2011 as the cream of the country’s hockey talent comes together to compete in front of the watching coaches from Great Britain and the home nations of England, Scotland and Wales.

Now in its fifth year, the GBSL is Great Britain Hockey’s primary talent identification arena for athletes, coaches, umpires and officials.

In total, four women’s squads and five men’s squads will take part in the 2011 GBSL which runs from 16 April until 1 May.  Matches will take place at Sofia Gardens in Cardiff, Forthbank in Stirling and the Bisham Abbey and Lilleshall National Sports Centres in Buckinghamshire and Shropshire respectively.

The 2011 GBSL sees the return of the women’s competition after its 2010 break to allow the Scottish and Welsh women to prepare for World Cup Qualifying tournaments.  In the women’s GBSL, Scotland’s representation comes from the Caledonian Cougars, with the Pennine Pumas and Saxon Tigers representing England and the Celtic Panthers representing Wales.  Teams will play each other once before playing off for the classification spots based on their position in the table.  The women’s matches will take place over 16-17 April at Sofia Gardens and 30 April-1 May at Lilleshall.

In the men’s GBSL, which also gets underway in Cardiff, the Celtic Panthers from Wales will compete against the Caledonian Cougars and Highland Jaguars from Scotland and England’s Pennine Pumas and Saxon Tigers.   The men’s competition will see the teams play each other once in a round robin format with the 2011 GBSL winners the side that finishes top of the league table after four matches.  Games will be played over three rounds, with midweek fixtures on Wednesday 27 April featuring all-Scottish and all-English ties, between the opening and closing rounds at Sofia Gardens and Lilleshall.

Each squad has named up to 24 athletes, including three goalkeepers, with 20 then permitted to be named for each round of the competition.
