Junior Championships

The Junior Club Championships are all about giving youngsters the opportunity to play more hockey. Playing with or against their peers and friends is great fun and gives clubs an opportunity to nurture their talent. The Championships details document in the Related links & documents section provides more detail on each specific competition.

Boys & Girls Under 18s

These competitions will be run as they were last year, using a straight knockout format. Direct entry is permitted into either Tier 1 or Tier 2. If you lose your first match in either competition in which you directly enter you will get a second chance to reach a final with a place offered in the next plate competition (Tier 2 for Tier 1 entrants or Tier 3 for Tier 2 entrants).

Tier 1 is the premier competition for this age group. If you want to be the greatest junior team in the land or test yourselves up against some of the best under 18 players in the country, then this is the competition for you. Tier 2 offers greater flexibility in the player eligibility regulations to support clubs with smaller junior sections. Guest players may be registered to help form a team and fulfil fixtures against like-minded clubs.

Boys & Girls Under 16s and 14s Tier 1 & 2

These competitions will continue to run as they have done previously. Pools will be generated for the early stages based on the geographical spread of all entrants. A round robin pool will be played out with a mixture of home & away games - travel will be kept to a minimum where possible.

Successful teams in both the Tier 1 and Tier 2 Champs will qualify for area finals to be played at a central location within that area. At this stage round robin pools will be played over the course of a day to determine area champions. In the Tier 1 only, area champions will qualify for the national finals.

Tier 1 has been designed for strong junior sections who see themselves as competitive with a degree of existing tournament experience. Tier 2 is more relaxed and crosses the bridge between the top junior sides and those just beginning on their competitive journey - ideal for developing junior sections who are striving to become more competitive.

Boys & Girls Under 14s Tier 3 Development (7-a-side)

These competitions will continue to run as they have done previously. Pools will be generated for the early stages based on the geographical spread of all entrants. A round robin pool will be played out with a mixture of home & away games - travel will be kept to a minimum where possible. A reminder that this competition is played as 7-a-side matches and is ideal for clubs with limited junior player availability, or those looking to gain their first competitive experiences.

Dates

The competition dates for 2020/21 are available to view and download in the Related Links & Documents section.

The entry system closes on different dates depending on which competition you wish to enter. A new staggered closing date system has been introduced for the Junior Championships to help with managing the entries and communication process with participants. It is important that teams understand which competition they have entered and try to enter the correct competition as early as possible. The communication process immediately after the closing date will help teams understand how their pools and fixtures may be shaped.

The closing dates are as follows;

Boys & Girls U18s Tier 1 & 2: Monday 14 September

Boys & Girls U16s Tier 1: Monday 07 September

Boys & Girls U16s Tier 2: Monday 21 September

Boys & Girls U14s Tier 1: Monday 14 September

Boys & Girls U14s Tier 2 & 3: Monday 28 September

The competitions department will be in touch shortly after this time with further details of the competitions, including the much anticipated draws.

***2020/21 in light of Covid-19***

We are hopeful of delivering an England Hockey Championships programme for the 2020/21 season. At present we are planning to operate a full suite of Championships over the course of a normal season, without disruption. However, it is carefully being monitored and managed as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. We will continue to relate to England Hockey's Return to Play Roadmap to determine when exactly competitive hockey can resume.

It may still be possible that some of the Championships have to be tweaked or altered slightly in order to comply with our policies on returning to play, however, we are doing our best to avoid this and have set out the following to support clubs in participating;

Entry fee price freeze - entry fees the same as last season, no inflation or increase on last years fees!

Enter now, pay & play later - no obligation to pay entry fees until it is confirmed the competitions will be going ahead!

First come, first served - enter early to avoid disappointment! If entries have to be limited to support reformatting of competitions, this will be done on a first come first served basis!

It is important to us that we support our clubs, and hope that in return, clubs will continue to support these alternative competitions. Without your entries these competitions will not be feasible, so we ask that you, like us, continue to plan for a regular season and enter the Championships as early as possible.
