East Grinstead went another week unbeaten to maintain their excellent start to the Maxifuel Super Sixes Indoor Championship Men’s Premier Division at Loughborough University on Saturday.

Wins over Old Loughtonians and Canterbury ensure that they remain at the top of the league, although Bowdon have managed to keep within one point of the Sussex side.

Old Loughtonians were the first team to face East Grinstead today and they were contained until the twelfth minute when Ashley Jackson struck from open play to take the lead.

Jackson doubled the lead from the penalty spot after 19 minutes and that’s how the first half ended.

Ashley Jackson wasn’t done yet though and in a second half that brought about a five goal blitz from East Grinstead, Jackson ended the game with six goals. Paul Nicholls scored a consolation for Old Loughtonians and the match ended 1-7.

In their second game against Canterbury, Ashley Jackson showed his quality yet again with an impressive hat-trick. Further goals from Mark Pearn, Iain Lewers and Daniel Koschyk rounded off a fine 6-3 win.

With the gauntlet firmly thrown down, Bowdon responded positively with two wins of their own. They narrowly won a 7-8 encounter with Canterbury before blowing Sevenoaks away with a 6-1 victory.

Free-scoring Simon Egerton’s personal tally for the day was six goals and it’s easy to see why they have just one loss on their record.

Old Loughtonians were involved in a tense tie against Surbiton. The game remained at 0-0 with 39:12 showing on the clock when Harry Martin swept in a penalty corner. He must have thought he’d won the fixture for his team but Surbiton stunned the Essex club by scoring a penalty corner of their own through Tim Deakin in overtime.

And in the day’s final match, Beeston notched up an emphatic 9-1 win over Harleston Magpies.

Paddy Schmidt bagged a hat-trick of goals, while captain Adam Dixon and Stephen Lawrence both scored twice, and others came from Martin Scanlon and Timothy Davenport.

Elsewhere, Loughborough Students are top of Division One after securing two victories in the opening day of fixtures at Lilleshall National Sports Centre.

They won 9-2 over Hampstead and Westminster, while Havant were despatched 13-2 in their second encounter.
