Junior Finals Weekend

Its Finals weekend in the Junior Competitions with teams in the U18’s, U16’s and U14’s battling out to become National and Regional champions.

U18 Cup & Plate Finals

The U18’s Cup & Plate Finals take place at Oxford Hawks Hockey Club with the Boys playing Saturday and the Girls playing Sunday. The U18 Cup has changed from the tradition round robin format in previous years to a straight semi final and final which will be played in one day, with matches 25 minutes each way. This is the format that has been used in the U18 Plate the past few seasons.

Saturday starts with the Boys U18 Plate as Belper take on Colchester, followed by Reading v West Bridgford Monarchs. The Boys U18 Cup starts at 1.30pm with holders Beeston taking on Wycombe, whilst Southgate play Woking in the second Semi Final. The Boys U18 Plate Final and play off for third place starts at 4pm, with the Cup Final and third/fourth playoff starting at 5.15pm.

The Girls take centre stage on Sunday with Chelmsford playing Cannock and Saffron Walden taking on Isca in the Plate, before Firebrands play Southgate and Beeston take on Teddington in the Cup. The Girls U18 Plate Final and third/fourth playoff begin at 3pm with the weekend ending with the Cup Final matches at 4.15pm.

U16 Championships

The U16 Championships take place at Cannock Hockey Club. 16 teams make up the finals day, with eight in the boys competition and eight in the girls. The eight teams in each gender are split into two pools of four where they play each other once. The top team in each pool qualify for the final on Sunday afternoon, with the second place teams playing off for third and fourth place.

The format for the U16 Competition has changed from previous years, with teams playing in local groups to qualify for area finals. The winners of those area finals make up the 16 finalists this weekend. The teams competing in Boys Pool A are hosts Cannock, Neston South Wirral, Old Loughtonians and Wycombe, with Ashmoor, Belper, Ben Rhydding and 2009 champions Bromley & Beckenham in Boys Pool B. There will be a new Boys U16 national champion this year with current holders Beeston not making the finals.

In Girls Pool C, we have Lichfield, Old Loughtonians, Team Bath Buccaneers and Wakefield; with Beeston, Isca, Kirkby Lonsdale and Surbiton in Girls Pool D. Yorkshire side Wakefield have been the major force in this competition in recent years, having been national champions for the previous four seasons as they look to make it five in a row.

U14 Championships

There are a total of 16 regional cluster finals taking place in the U14 Championships this weekend, with eight in the boys and eight in the girls. There are two cluster finals in each of the four regions (North, Midlands, East and West), with four teams making up each final. The teams play each other once on Sunday, with the team finishing top becoming regional cluster champions. This is the last year the competition with be held like this, with the U14 Championships changing next year to replicate the U16’s with a national final.
