Leigh goal not enough as England U21s lose to USA

ENGLAND Under-21 Women went down 3-1 in their opening game of a four-match Test Series against America at Lilleshall NSC in Shropshire on Tuesday evening.

With the squad only having been together for a short period of time it took England some time to settle, by which time their American rivals – who have been together at Lilleshall for a few days and had several training sessions – had found the net.

Katie Gerzabech put the USA ahead after just 11 minutes from open play, but ten minutes later England were back level thanks to a strike from Clifton’s Jo Leigh, who scored from the left post with a shot into the bottom corner following some good work down the right hand side from Beeston’s Jo Hunter.

However, America re-took the lead on 28 minutes through Tara Vittese, and then extended their lead to the eventual full time score of 3-1 with Emma Bozek scoring just two minutes into the second half.

“The game was fairly open, but they were a little bit sharper than us and we’ve not had much of a programme yet and were just trying a few thinks out, whereas America have been here a few days training already,” said Team Manager Mel Bennett.

“We got quite a few corners in the second half that we didn’t convert, but it’s good that we are getting the corners – we just need to work on getting some of them to count.”
