Men's EHL Promotion Tournament - Day Two

Men's EHL Promotion Tournament Match 3

Exeter University 0 (0)

Canterbury 3 (1)

Michael Farrer 35 (PC)

Martin Sutherland 62,68 (F,F)

Canterbury joined Brooklands MU in sealing promotion to the premier league after comfortably coming out 3-0 winners against Exeter University.

The game was evenly matched in the opening periods with neither side having many clear cut chances, with the teams not wanting to give much away in a match that meant everything to the two teams. It was Canterbury who eventually managed to get the breakthrough though on the stroke of half time thanks to a low converted penalty corner from captain Farrer.

The game could have gone either way in the second half with Exeter University needing at least a goal to go back above Canterbury into second play. However, two goals in the last ten minutes meant that Canterbury would play in the Premier Division next season. The first goal came on 62 minutes through Martin Sutherland, and as Exeter pushed forward in search of a comeback, Canterbury broke forward on the counter attack which allowed Sutherland to score his second goal of the match and his team’s third.

Men's EHL Promotion Tournament Match 4

Brooklands MU 2 (2)

Kieran Mulholland 9 (F)

David Seddon 16 (PC)

Team Bath Buccaneers 2 (1)

Lewis Prosser 24 (PC)

Johnny Kinder 47 (F)

Team Bath Buccaneers came from two goals down to grab their first point of the EHL Promotion Tournament. Kieran Mulholland scored arguably the best goal of the weekend to put his side 1-0 up with a powerful shot from the edge of the D on his reverse that flew into the top left hand corner, giving the keeper no chance. It took Brooklands MU just seven minutes to double this lead when David Seddon hit a low penalty corner.

Giving the defeat the day before, it would have been easy for Team Bath Buccaneers to lose motivation at this stage but it was quite the opposite as they started to pile the pressure on the Brooklands defence. A series of penalty corners followed and they were finally rewarded for their persistence as Lewis Prosser deflected in from a penalty corner, making the score 2-1 going into the break.

Twelve minutes into the second half and Team Bath were level thanks to a Johnny Kinder goal. Despite chances at both ends, this is the way it stayed for the remainder of the match which meant Brooklands finished top of the table at the end of the tournament.
