Beeston supreme as they secure place in EHL KO16

Beeston enjoyed a fantastic weekend in Barcelona for Round 1.1 of the Euro Hockey League. The Nottinghamshire side recorded victories of 6-0 and 5-4 against Polish side Poznan and Dutch giants Amsterdam H&BC respectively.


Match 1: Beeston 6 - 0 W.K.S. Grunwald  Poznan

The encounter between the English league leaders and the top-ranked team of the Polish Hockey League was goal-less for almost 45 minutes as both sides had chances but failed to convert. It took Beeston until the third quarter to make the break through, but it was worth the wait.

David Ames opened the floodgates for Beeston as they hit Poznan for six in the final 30 minutes of the game. Ben Arnold added his name to score sheet before the unstoppable Simon Egerton added three more and GB youngster Harry Martin scored in the final minute to secure the 6-0 victory.

Full back, Ollie Willars was named man of the match and summed up the victory, “We kept the game extremely tight for the first half and then unleashed a whirlwind that left Grunwald chasing shadows. We have the ability to know how to step up a gear when required. “


Match 2: Amsterdam H&BC 4 - 5 Beeston

Beeston left no doubts about their Round 2 qualification when they defeated Dutch champions, Amsterdam H&BC in a nine goal thriller. Beeston came back from being down 4-2 to secure the points and top their group.

Spanish internationals Santi Freixa and Roc Olivia gave the Dutch champions a two goal advantage before Beeston pulled one back through David Ames. Further goals from Dutch stars Billy Bakker and Taeke Taekema and one from Beeston's Adam Dixon took the score to 4-2 going into the final 10 minutes.

A remarkable comeback from Beeston followed as Martin Jones, David Ames and Mark Wadsley all found the target to secure the win, much to the delight of the Beeston supporters who had made the trip to Barcelona.

Speaking after the game Beeston manager, Graham Griffiths, summed up the two matches in Barcelona, “This was Beeston at its very best. We have come a long way in recent seasons and have established ourselves as a top European side. It was a team effort of the highest quality."
