Canterbury aim to extend unbeaten run

Susie Townsend, Canterbury, 450

Leaders Canterbury will be aiming to continue their unbeaten start to the season in the Investec Women’s Hockey League Premier Division when they entertain University of Birmingham at Polo Farm on Saturday.

They have four wins from their opening six league matches, but Canterbury are taking nothing for granted.

“They are a young side who live together and train together,” said Canterbury captain Susie Townsend. “They have produced some great players over the years and have some good talent in their current team.

“We will be looking at some video of them, but we will focus on ourselves and how we play as we like to dictate play.

“We struggled against them last season and one of our worst performances was at Birmingham, so that may be in the back of people’s minds.”

Should Canterbury slip up, there are four teams behind them who could steal top spot from them.

Second-placed Sutton Coldfield take on a Leicester side who are still on a high following their 5-0 win over rivals Reading, while third-placed Surbiton travel to Clifton.

Elsewhere, Bowdon Hightown entertain Reading, and the bottom two play each other in the Slough v Olton and West Warwicks clash.

After scraping past Gloucester City 2-1 last weekend, Isca will take on bottom of the table Staines in the Investec Women’s Conference West this Saturday, while leaders Buckingham are targeting a seventh consecutive league victory when they go to Taunton Vale.

Emphatic 12-0 winners over Liverpool Sefton last weekend, leaders Beeston go to Doncaster in the Investec Women’s Conference North, while second-placed University of Durham travel to Wakefield Bradford.

And in the Investec Women’s Conference East, second-placed Ipswich play host to Sevenoaks. With both sides just one point behind leaders Harleston Magpies, the winner may go top of the table depending on the result of Magpies’ clash at Old Loughtonians.
