Dutch prove too much for England U16 Boys

ENGLAND Under-16 Boys battled well against a strong Dutch side in their opening match of the Easter Four Nations Tournament in Valencia, Spain, on Good Friday, but were on the wrong end of a three-nil scoreline.

In their first taste of international hockey, the young squad were given some valuable lessons by the Dutch, who were sharper and quicker to the ball and capitalised clinically on England errors.

Head Coach Charlie Bannister said: “This is their first taste of international hockey and they looked surprised about the pace, but there is plenty for us to address and we look forward to tomorrow’s encounter with hosts Spain.”

England did enjoy a good 15-minute spell of intense pressure just after half time, but the Dutch soaked it up and hit back.

“The boys know they can compete,” added Bannister. “We’ve come away from the game with a good understanding that they have to be a little better and more up with the pace.”
