Leicester beat Surbiton in semi final

Leicester produced a dramatic fight back to secure their place in the final of the Investec Women’s Hockey League with a penalty shuffle shootout win over Surbiton.

The game was 2-2 at the end of time and neither side could find a winner in silver goal extra time so it went down to a nerve-racking shuffle.

Before the shootout drama, Emma Batten opened the scoring inside the first minute of the game after deflecting Vicky Bryant’s shot into the Leicester goal.

Amy Bryant doubled the lead with a neat reverse stick shot from a penalty corner.

But Leicester still looked dangerous and mounted a strong comeback as Jo Hunter showed some fantastic skill in the build up to Emma Clarke’s goal.

Then, with a corner taken after the half time buzzer, Julia Karwatzky produced a superb strike to equalise going into the break.

As hard as they tried, neither side could find a winner and so it all came down to the shootout.

Julia Karwatzky, Vanessa Hawkins and Nicola White hit the net for Leicester as they went through 3-2.

White said afterwards: “It was a feisty game, we got off to a slow start and allowed Surbiton to go two goals up, but we got into our stride and fought back. We didn’t give up and managed to force extra time.

“It was a really even battle and a gutsy team performance. Matches like these just go to show there’s so little difference between the top four sides in the Premier Division.

“We’ll be watching the next game with interest to see who our opponents will be in the final.”
