Reading battle through to EHL KO16

Reading had to be patient as they booked their place in the final 16 of the Euro Hockey League at the weekend. They lost their first game on Saturday to Dutch champions HC Rotterdam and then had to wait until the final game of the weekend against tournament hosts Lille MHC to secure their spot at next Easter's showdown event.

HC Rotterdam 4-1 Reading

Reading's first test of the weekend was always going to be a huge task as they faced one of the best sides in the compeition HC Rotterdam. Bjorn Kellerman scored twice for the Dutch giants, with Frans Hagemans and Seve van Ass also getting their names on the score-sheet to earn Rotterdam their second win of the weekend following their triumph over Lille on Friday.

Reading 3-0 Lille MHC

Reading knew that they needed to win against home favourites Lille if they were to progress through to the KO16 and they did just that, battling to a 3-0 win over the hosts to reach the knock-out stages for a remarkable seventh successive season.

Richard Mantell scored two cracking penalty corner drag-flicks in the contest, with England and GB international Tom Carson helping to break the hearts of the home favourites with a late field goal.
