Boys U18 Schools Cup

The first round of the Boys’ Schools U18 Cup has been completed.

The new look competition is being run on a knockout basis this season and there have already been some big names who have been beaten and will take their place in the parallel Plate competition for second round losers.

Last year’s runners up Cranleigh were beaten 7-3 by Kent College and perennial finalists Millfield saw their challenge fall at the first hurdle, losing to Exeter 4-2 on strokes after the game finished 2-2 in normal time.

However the holders Whitgift were comfortable 8-0 winners against Chigwell and Repton are the first team through to Round 3 after beating Adams GS 5-2.

Although the nature of the draw means there will always be some high scoring games nine of the ties were decided on strokes and another fourteen only by the odd goal. Despite the untried format only two of the scheduled 63 ties saw walkovers and all these ties were played by the deadlines of 17 January.

The second round ties in the Cup are to be played by 31 January as are the first round ties in the Plate competition.
