U16 & U18 Club Finals

Winners at the U18 Cup and Plate competition 2014

This weekend the first of the domestic club finals take place with the U16 Championships at Old Loughtonians Hockey Club and the U18 Cup & Plate Finals at Lee Valley Hockey & Tennis Centre.

U16 Championships

Old Loughtonians HC plays host to the U16 Championships Finals as eight boys' and eight girls' teams battle for a place in the final at Lee Valley Hockey & Tennis Centre (LVHTC) on Sunday.

The event features a number of familiar teams, with Beeston Boys and Surbiton Girls back to defend the titles they won last season at Wakefield Hockey Club.

Surbiton’s victory last time out was one of many titles they claimed as a club in an incredible campaign which brought an end to Wakefield’s dominance of the competition where they won six consecutive championships.
Wakefield are back in the finals, too and will face Surbiton in Pool C, along with newcomers Epsom, who qualified as winners of East Pool B in Tier 2, and Belper who were the major force in this competition before Wakefield’s run of championships. In Pool D, Beeston make their fifth National Final appearance in six years, while Reading return to the finals hoping to improve on their fourth place finish last season. Wimbledon & Alderley Edge are the other teams in Pool D making their first appearances at a National Final for this age group.

Beeston boys will be aiming to defend the title they won last season when they beat the previous holders Canterbury in a thrilling final. The two teams will come up against each other in Pool B, with Beeston on the search for a sixth title in this competition. They are joined by Deeside Ramblers who featured in last year’s finals, and Bournemouth who are making their debut appearance at this age group.
Cannock return for the first time since they hosted this tournament in 2012, and will come up against 2008 champions Wycombe in Pool A. Also in Pool A are Surbiton and Neston South Wirral who featured in last season’s finals.

Please note that the clocks also go forward on Saturday evening!

U18 Cup & Plate Finals.

The Girls' U18s take centre stage at Lee Valley Hockey & Tennis Centre on Saturday with the Cup & Plate Finals. West meets East in the first of the Plate semi-finals, with Plymouth Marjon taking on Harleston Magpies. Alderley Edge come up against Reading in the second of the semi finals. None of the four teams have previously won the plate, so a new champion is guaranteed

In the Cup, Beeston will hope to put the disappointment of losing last year’s final behind them as they face Isca in the first of the semi finals. The second semi final features two teams who are yet to win the Cup at this age group, as Bowdon face East Grinstead.

The attention on Sunday turns to the Boys. The Plate semi finals are first pitting Windermere against Bury St Edmunds and Fareham against Surbiton. 2010 Champions Cannock follow their Boys' U16 team into a National Final, and face Cambridge City in the first of the Cup semi finals. It’s 2011 champions Beeston against current holders Team Bath Buccaneers in the second semi final, with the finals taking place later in the day.

This means that Beeston have a representative in all four junior club national finals this weekend, with Cannock, Surbiton, Alderley Edge and Reading also having more than one team playing this weekend. Congratulations to all teams that have made the National Finals and good luck with your quest for national glory!
