England Under-18 Boys lost out to hosts Spain at the EuroHockey Youth Championships in Santander on Wednesday evening, ending their hopes of a medal.

“Spain turned on a very strong performance at home,” said head coach Martin Jones. “On this occasion we just couldn’t stay with them despite a valiant attempt in the final quarter, most of which we played with a kicking back and only let one goal in.”

Spain took the lead in the second minute from a penalty corner, Josep Cunill scoring the goal. And early in the second quarter they doubled their advantage with a penalty stroke from Roger Figa.

Two minutes later and they had their third goal courtesy of a Jan Vall field goal, but England hit back on the stroke of half time with captain Morgan Males finding the net from the top of the D at a penalty corner (pictured).

However, Spain retained control of the game and added further to the score with Figa bagging his second field goal on 37 minutes before Ignacio Abajo scored from open play on 49 minutes.

After a rest day on Thursday, England will now face France on Friday.
