Newcastle HC host a World Cup hockey hen-do

Newcastle HC hen-do

On Wednesday 25th July a ‘hockey hen do’ from Newcastle hockey club made the long journey south for England’s second match of the tournament against the USA.

‘When the tickets came out almost a year ago, the idea was suggested we should make it a hen do as I am getting married in August,’ said goalkeeper and bride to be Amy.

This is not the first time this season Newcastle hockey club has graced Lee Valley as their master’s team had an unbelievable run in the England Hockey Championships where ‘Newcastle Nana’s’ reached the final.

‘On the England Hockey website, it said only the best players in England play on this pitch – so I’m here to prove that that’s not true.’

The Newcastle ladies were effusive in their admiration for the world-class facilities at Lee Valley.

‘For us in the North we don’t have facilities like this, and to be given the opportunity to play on this for our first and second team or our over 35’s is a huge privilege.’

‘To come and watch people at the level that [international teams] are playing at is unbelievable. To think that some of us have played on that pitch, thank you England Hockey.’

The celebrations for the Newcastle ladies were not to be twofold as England were held to a stalemate by the USA, but this did not dampen the spirits of the ladies from the north.

‘It’s amazing to get to come down and watch. The best thing about hockey is the team. Playing for the team, hanging out with your friends, enjoying each other’s company, having a really good time every Saturday and every time we train. Coming here and not having to play but watching is pretty good fun.’
