From hockey dad, taxi and coach to player with Vitality Back To Hockey

Nigel Smith Back To Hockey
Nigel Smith is a self-employed married 54-year-old male with 2 daughters… But that’s not all, he is hockey Parent to 16yr old Millie, assistant coach to U16 girls, Caretaker Manager to Ladies 1sts, Match Delegate to Ladies 1sts and Dads Taxi. Nigel spent years coaching and being hockey dad before he decided to give Back to Hockey a go.

He had a wealth of hockey knowledge from coaching and spending many weekends watching his daughter play but had never picked up the stick himself.
Like most Nigel was excited and nervous before his venture out on to the pitch as a player, but, he loved my experience due to the friendliness and understanding of the coaches at Thirsk Hockey Club and being able to put his experiences of watching and coaching into practice at a pace where he felt under no pressure.

Nigel continued to attend back to hockey sessions because “The best bit was being able to play hockey with likeminded people, who, like me just wanted to play hockey and have fun as well.” Nigels hockey career didn’t end there though “. I went to preseason training with the seniors and was asked by the men if I fancied playing league hockey, to which I nervously agreed to, I have played 6 games for Thirsk Men’s 3rd team in the Yorkshire League Div. 5 North.”

Nigel has 1 top tip for anyone thinking of giving Hockey a try “Anybody who is thinking about Trying Back to Hockey I’d say, just go for it! It’s a great experience whether you want to get into hockey and play for a team or just fancy playing hockey with no pressure….Its fantastic!”

Our national campaign might be over but you can still sign up to Vitality Back To Hockey at various clubs across the country.
