Team of the Week 2019/20 - Round 2

Team of the week 2019/20
We’ve had another fantastic set of nominations from which we’ve selected our second Team Of The Week XI of the season.

This week’s team features much loved captains, impressive goalscoring feats and the Hockey Family coming to the fore once again.

Goalkeeper

Name: Emily Braginton
Club: Long Sutton HC
Nomination: Emily received no fewer than three nominations from her team-mates this week. Aged just 16 she is her team’s captain and kept them positive throughout a tough game in which an injury forced them to play with 10 players. She also saved yet another stroke this season and made several other fine blocks too.

Defence

Name: Juliet Gardner
Club: Clifton Robinsons HC
Nomination: Juliet is new to the club and was outstanding at the back once again this week, with her constant battling and great distribution seeing her team to victory to move top of the league.

Name: Kayleigh Easton
Club: Plym Valley HC
Nomination: Having taken on the 3rd XI captaincy this year, Kayleigh led her team to their first league win at the weekend. According to her nominator, ‘she’s always smiling and encouraging and is the complete epitome of what you want in a captain’.

Kayleigh Easton

Name: Kirstie-Anne Hughes
Club: Taw Valley HC
Nomination: It was an all-action performance from Kirstie-Anne at the weekend. She was relentless in defence, won pretty much every tackle and distributed brilliant into midfield. She also blocked corners and stopped shots on the goal line too!

Midfield

Name: Kate Curtis
Club: Cambridge City HC
Nomination: Having sustained a nasty head injury last Sunday, Kate returned this week in a physical game and contributed hugely in a 6-1 win. Composed in possession, great interceptions and read the game well.

Kate Curtis

Name: George Franklin
Club: Leighton Buzzard HC
Nomination: It’s only his second season but George loves the sport. He is willing and capable to play in any position and when not playing can be found umpiring and watching YouTube videos to improve his game. Also recently became a dad to twins.

Name: Avon HC U15s
Club: Avon HC
Nomination: Another great example of the Hockey Family spirit coming to the fore this week. Many members of the boys’ U15 squad helped out Somerset Hockey, filling in the numbers and playing out of position to ensure their tournament went ahead, with the players also playing three games in a row.

Avon HC U15s

Attack

Name: Heather Batten
Club: Fareham HC
Nomination: Another player with multiple nominations, Heather scored four goals in a 6-1 victory at the weekend and now has 17 in her first five games this season. That’s certainly a strong start!

Name: James Ward
Club: Harleston Magpies HC
Nomination: James made his debut for Harleston at the weekend having previously played for Marlow. He scored with his very first touch after coming off the bench and bagged another before the end of the game too. He then had to dash off at the end of the game to go on a family holiday that he’d delayed to play. Now that’s commitment to the cause!

James Ward

Name: Nicola Conway
Club: Lancaster HC
Nomination: Nicola completed an impressive scoring feat this weekend, notching her 100th 1st XI goal for the club having been there for just over three years. So impressed were her team-mates that two of them nominated her for #TeamOfTheWeek.

Name: Emma Seymour-Mead
Club: Brooklands Poynton
Nomination: Emma rose to the occasion this weekend with her team missing four players due to half-term. She showed great close control and produced mesmerising runs, scored once and set up another in a 4-0 win and epitomises the confidence, enthusiasm and skill that the club’s youngsters always exhibit.
