Hockey's European Cup Winners Cup Comes to England

Bowdon Hightown has been named by the European Hockey Federation (EHF) as the host of the 2009 Women’s EuroHockey Cup Winners Cup.  The competition takes place from 10-13 April 2009.

This is the first time in ten years that an English club has hosted a top women’s European club event.

Bowdon Hightown qualified for the tournament as Slazenger England Hockey League (EHL) Premier Division runners-up in 2007-08 and will be one of eight teams competing over the Easter weekend at South Down Road.  Also competing are KTHC Stadion Rot-Weiss Koln (GER), Bonagrass Grove (SCO), Club de Campo Villa de Madrid (ESP), HF Lorenzoni (ITA), Amsterdam H&BC (NED), Kolos Borispol (UKR) and Royal Uccle STHC (BEL).

Mike Egerton, who is leading the organisation of the event, believes the announcement shows how far the club has come in recent years: "Bowdon are delighted to be hosting the Women’s European Cup Winners cup with the support of England Hockey.  We have worked very hard to get the club to where it is today, the only club in the country with men's and women's teams in the Slazenger EHL Premier League.  Having the competition at Bowdon is a great reward."

Stephen Barlow, Competitions & Events Manager for England Hockey, says Bowdon’s experience should stand them in good stead: “They are a club with a proud tradition and I am sure they will build on the experience of successfully hosting domestic competitions since England Hockey moved events away from Milton Keynes.  I am confident the club will rise to the challenge and put on a great event.”

The Cup Winners Cup title is actually something of a misnomer as very few European countries have knock-out cup competitions.  It was introduced to allow people to understand that like the old football tournament of the same name, it is the second tournament after the European club championship, the Club Champions Cup.

From Sunday 1 February the club will be running a website dedicated to the Women’s Cup Winners Cup at
