England Indoor Squads v Scotland

The England indoor squads to face Scotland at Paisley’s Lagoon Centre later this month have been named.

Men’s indoor head coach Andy Halliday welcomes back 13 members of England’s ABN AMRO Champions Trophy squad to his expanded squad for the four matches in Scotland while Nick Clarke has brought in four new players to the women’s squad that played against Scotland in Birmingham on Monday, with Jo Ellis, Susie Gilbert, Chloe Rogers and Sally Walton dropping out due to Great Britain’s test series in Argentina.

Simon Egerton challenges a Scottish opponent during the International Indoor Test Match between England men and Scotland at the NIA, 7 December 2009Of the 12 men’s players that played against Scotland in Birmingham, David Beckett, Matt Daly, Simon Egerton (pictured right), Adam Harper and Richard Springham are retained to be joined by the majority of the squad that returned from Melbourne on Monday, giving Halliday a total of 18 players at his disposal.

Included in that group is newly crowned World Young Player of the Year Ashley Jackson, whose close skills and set piece prowess are as dangerous to oppositions in the indoor game as they are outdoors.  The 22 year old returns home to England and former club East Grinstead for the start of the indoor season from his outdoor club, HGC in the Netherlands.

In the women’s squad, Nick Clarke welcomes youngsters Sarah Haycroft, Lauren Turner, Georgie Twigg and Hollie Webb, all of whom are still shy of their 20th birthdays and will make their senior indoor international debuts in Scotland.

Of the men’s squad, only Loughborough Students’ David Condon, who made his senior outdoor international debut at the ABN AMRO Champions Trophy, and Surbiton’s James Tindall have yet to play for England indoors.

Both of England’s squads will be using the tests in Scotland as vital preparation for their respective European campaigns in January as the men go for promotion to Europe’s top tier from the EuroHockey Indoor Nations Trophy division and the women look to climb out of the Challenge division after narrowly missing out on promotion in Sheffield two years ago.  It is possible, depending on results, that England’s men might meet Scotland again in a classification match in Poznan next month with both sides competing in the Trophy.
