Second XI Finals Weekend

The Second XI Finals take place this weekend with eight teams going for National glory at Chelmsford HC.

Women's Second XI Trophy Final
The day starts with the Women’s Second XI Trophy Final as Lewes take on Surbiton. Surbiton have already gone one better than they did last season when they were knocked out at the Semi Final stage. This was a cup run which also saw them beat Lewes 11-0 in round two! However, Lewes have enjoyed a great season in their league this year finishing second only to East Grinstead in the Sussex Premier Division. Surbiton have also had a decent season as they finished fourth in the Surrey Premier. Neither side have made it to the final of this completion before so the Trophy will be going home with a new winner.

Following on from this match is the Women’s Second XI Cup Final between Cannock and Reading. Reading are also another team who have gone one better than they did last year when they were knocked out in the Semi Finals. Cannock haven’t had much success in this competition having only reached the Quarter Finals once in the last four years but they have had a good season this year finishing second in the Midlands Feeder North Division. Reading have also had a good year finishing second only to Surbiton First XI in the South Division One. Neither team have reached the final of this competition before.

Men's Second XI Cup

Next up is the first of the Men’s matches Southgate take on Loughborough Students in the Men’s Second XI Cup. Both teams have witnessed heartache in the Final of this competition in the last two years with Southgate losing on Penalty Strokes in 2008 and Loughborough Students losing on Golden Goal last year. The sides are no strangers to each other either, as Loughborough Students beat Southgate 2-1 in the Semi Final last year, with Southgate beating the students 4-3 in the Quarter Finals the year before.  In their respective leagues, Southgate finished fourth in the London Premier League, with Loughborough students having an inconsistent season finishing mid table in the Midlands Second XI Premier. Loughborough Students are chasing their second Men’s Second XI Cup title, with Southgate out to win the cup for the first time.

The last match of the day features current holders Eastcote and West Bridgford Monarchs in the Men’s Second XI Trophy Final. Eastcote look to become the first club to defend the trophy after they beat Brighton & Hove in last season’s Final. The Nottingham based side are no strangers to this competition reaching the Quarter Finals the previous two seasons, as well as the Final in 2005 and 2006 where they narrowly lost out. Eastcote have enjoyed a great season so far finishing second in MBBO Regional One with West Bridgford Monarchs finishing sixth in the Midlands Second XI Premier.
