Hundreds gather for Alderley Edge Club Day

Hundreds of people turned out on Sunday to help Harvester Club of the Season, Alderley Edge, celebrate the opening of their new £550,000 pitch - The Edge Hockey Centre - as part of a Grow Your Own Club Day special.

England Hockey mascots Jasper and Jess were joined by Harvey the Harvester rabbit and The ‘Edgehog, Alderley Edge’s very own mascot.  See more photos of them all on our Facebook page.

The Club recently completed a seven year project in conjunction with The Ryleys School, which has seen a new artificial pitch built to be shared between Alderley Edge and the school.  Following coaching sessions on the new pitch for the under 11s and under 13s, a 100 metre ribbon was run the length of the pitch, from goal post to goal post.  The 200 strong crowd was welcomed with speeches from Nick Rudgard, AEHC President, and the school headmaster Pat Barrett, before the ribbon was cut to whoops and cheers from the spectators.

With the ceremonial proceedings over it was left to the Alderley Edge men’s 1st XI to get the party started and they did it in style with a 7-0 victory over Stockport Bramhall in the Men’s Trophy.  The Club thanked their opponents, who had graciously given up home advantage in the draw to help Alderley Edge celebrate its special day.  After the match it was back to the Clubhouse for Quicksticks, The Cage, Rush Hockey and food.

Alderley Edge is a Grow Your Own Club.  Grow Your Own is a free scheme for hockey clubs, supported by Harvester.  By signing up to Grow Your Own, clubs gain access to a series of excellent resources and advice created specially to assist those that aspire to be well run, welcoming and successful.  With an emphasis on allowing clubs to develop in the manner best suited to their needs, the Grow Your Own series consists of Grow Your Own Players, Grow Your Own Volunteers, Grow Your Own Money and Grow Your Own Club Day.
