Ansley celebrates scoring

Hockey fans everywhere were glued to their television screens as Great Britain’s Women held their nerve to capture their first ever Olympic gold medal out in Rio.

However, few inside the hockey family could have foreseen the impact the brave, passionate display of Danny Kerry’s side would have on the British public as a whole.

A host of celebrity names took to Twitter to show they were entralled by the spectacle of a British team finally coming out on top in a shootout. The likes of Gary Lineker, JK Rowling, BBC’s Dan Walker, Jacqui Oatley and Olympics Guru Ollie Williams were all gripped by the spectacle. As were the likes of Jessica Ennis-Hill and Sir Clive Woodward and many, many more.

It’s not just the celebrities who were captivated by the efforts of the Great Britain women’s hockey team. The BBC ran their traditional end of Olympics poll where they asked the nation to vote for their favourite moment of the games. Edging out Mo Farah by 2% the GB Hockey team were officially the nation’s favourite, taking 22% of the votes! Fantastic to see our sport and our players recognised in such way!
