Bronze joy for England Under-18 Girls

ENG v GER U18 girls, July 21 2018

England U18 Girls 2 (0)
Germany U18 Girls 1 (1)

Trailing at half time, England Under-18 Girls battled back in style to beat Germany 2-1 and secure bronze at the EuroHockey Youth Championships in Spain on Saturday.

“We’re absolutely delighted to come away with a bronze medal. It really shows the character of the group that we have, and with two players down with a tummy bug last night,” said head coach Sarah Kelleher.

“They put in a great gritty performance staying in the game all the way through to come back from one-nil down to take the win was a real test of character as a group. It’s a nice end to the tournament to end on a high.”

Germany took the lead on the stroke of half time with Lilly Stoffelsma scoring from open play.

But England kept their heads, and after holding the Germany onslaught at bay through the third quarter they pulled level on 46 minutes, Victoria McCabe scoring a field goal.

And the vital winning goal came on 53 minutes, again from open play and this time scored by Lynn Vanderstichele while Germany were short-handed with a player on a yellow card.
