Kemperman Kills English Comeback

Richard Smith celebrates scoring a goal for England against the Netherlands at the ABN AMRO Champions Trophy, December 2009
Despite goals from Richard Mantell and Richard Smith, a Robbert Kemperman double and one from Rob Reckers gave the Dutch a 3-2 victory in the first meeting between England and the Netherlands since England’s golden goal semi final victory over the Dutch at the EuroHockey Nations Championships in the summer.

An early Kemperman goal settled the Dutch after just four minutes and when Rob Rekkers doubled the lead midway through the half England looked to have their work cut out.  But you cannot discount the mental and physical determination of this English team and Richard Mantell fired England back into the game before half time with a trademark penalty corner.  Kemperman restored the two goal deficit 14 minutes into the second period but an excellent solo effort from defender Richard Smith gave England hope with just over ten minutes remaining.  Despite an Ashley Jackson penalty corner England failed to find that crucial third goal and the Netherlands took all three points with just one pool match remaining.  The result also confirms England’s place in the 5th/6th place playoff on Sunday, with Spain’s 5-5 draw against Korea guaranteeing that they will be England’s opponents in that match.
