Comprehensive Spending Review

Comprehensive Spending Review – response from England Hockey

England Hockey has made significant progress in recent years to develop its thriving club structure, bring more young people into the sport and increase its profile.  The men’s and women’s international teams have achieved consistent steps up the world rankings increasing their medal success and the Single System nurtures talent to ensure we build on these achievements.

A significant portion of this progress has been supported by government funding through grants hockey receives from Sport England (for investment in increasing participation, improving satisfaction, and developing a talent pathway) and UK Sport (ring fenced for international teams). It is therefore appropriate, for the benefit of the Hockey family, to provide details of how the Comprehensive Spending Review is likely to affect our sport over the coming months and years.
At this point England Hockey has been informed it will not be subject to any immediate cuts. However, ongoing funding support is subject to an annual review of EHB’s performance and achieving its agreed targets both at grass roots and on the international stage.  Annual reviews are currently taking place and the outcome and funding for hockey from April 2011 will be known in mid December.

More widely, EHB’s ongoing challenge is to develop and grow alternative income streams in order to reduce its reliance on government funding.  With the support of the Hockey Family, this work will ensure England Hockey can build on recent good progress during what is set to be an exciting few years for the sport.
