Moore, Mackay see off Argentina for GB

Great Britain’s men won the second of their two matches against Argentina at Lilleshall NSC in Shropshire on Thursday morning as an English double from Wimbledon’s Rob Moore and one from Reading’s Iain Mackay sealed victory.  It was a deserved win for the British men who led three times and enjoyed dominant spells of possession throughout.

Rob Moore is challenged by Argentina's Pedro Ibarra while in action for Great Britain at Lilleshall NSC, November 2010Things started well when, with just five minutes on the clock, Wimbledon’s England forward Rob Moore (pictured right) smashed home an unstoppable effort low into the goal.  Good build up play from East Grinstead’s Ashley Jackson, the 2009 World Young Player of the Year, set up the opportunity but Moore still had much to do as he swivelled to take the shot on the turn, giving the Argentinean goalkeeper no chance as he buried in the bottom left corner.

Argentina responded to level the score before halftime when Agustin Mazzilli deflected the ball into the roof of the net on the reverse.  Just three metres out, his connection with the cross from the right hand side left GB’s Reading goalkeeper Nick Brothers without a hope.

Iain Mackay celebrates scoring for England against Spain at the 2010 ABN AMRO FIH Champions Trophy in Monchengladbach (c) two minutes into the second half, Iain Mackay (pictured right scoring for England in the Champions Trophy) restored Britain’s lead at the end of a flowing move that consisted of 15 passes.  Beginning deep inside the Great Britain half, the move finished with the Englishman’s diving deflection into the goal from just a metre out.  At the centre of the break was Scottish defender Niall Stott, the former Dundee Wanderers and Kelburne player, who crossed from the right after a one-two with Loughborough Students’ Richard Smith (pictured below right).  Sliding in to meet the cross, Mackay was at full stretch to connect to make it 2-1 and score his first goal for Great Britain.

Richard Smith in action for Great Britain men against Argentina, November 2010The goal came amid some excellent British play as GB looked set to run away with the match.  But having failed to convert further chances they were once again pegged back.  With a quarter of an hour remaining, Argentina captain Matias Vila fired home a rebound to make it 2-2 after Brothers had saved his initial shot.

Determined to claim victory, Great Britain netted the winning goal with three minutes remaining and again it was Stott, now playing at East Grinstead, who played an instrumental role in proceedings.  Having won possession on the halfway line, GB captain Barry Middleton slipped a pass through to the overlapping Stott, who had run the length of the pitch.  As he entered the circle all eyes were on Stott to shoot but his clever pass to the outside of the right post had pinpoint accuracy and was met by Moore, who knocked it home for his second and Great Britain’s third of the game.

Summing up the match in the context of the squad’s training camp, Team Manager Andy Halliday said: “We achieved more today of what we wanted to achieve over the two days.  We could have won more comfortably than 3-2 suggests.”
