EuroHockey ID Championships 2025 by Richard Chere
I have been exceptionally lucky to be involved in organising many tournaments over the years. However, I can safely say that one of the most enriching experiences of my life was to be part of the team that helped deliver the EuroHockey ID Championships.
The German organisers had run the European championships for athletes with an intellectual disability in 2023 but went all out to deliver a bigger and better event in 2025. The opening and closing ceremonies involved marching bands, a unique song written by an ID athlete and a flash participation of the Macarena. What was incredible was the support throughout the tournament with senior teams, umpires, umpire managers, VIPs and EuroHockey staff all visiting and soaking up the unique atmosphere of the tournament.
With a different rulebook, different regulations and different athlete needs it was a challenge for me as the technical delegate. It’s a difficult task for umpires and technical officials to try and ensure each athlete achieves their personal best whilst maintaining a safe, fair and fun tournament. A particular highlight for me was to see the first international ID game umpired by two umpires with ID. The finals were held on the stadium pitch immediately before reigning Olympic champions Netherlands played France. Our English team were silver medallists in their division. With England hosting the EuroHockey Championships in 2027 I would highly recommend getting involved with your local ID hockey set-up as it’s truly rewarding.
