Aymar brilliance undoes England in opener

England went down 1-0 to a moment of individual brilliance from Argentina's World Player of the Year Luciana Aymar on the opening day of the Champions Trophy in Amstelveen.

Despite the narrow scoreline, England Head Coach Danny Kerry expressed his disappointment that England had not been able to match up to Argentina. He said, “Some people brought their B games today and we need to be much tougher in possession and on the ball.  We need to be much better tomorrow.”

An even first half failed to produce a goal although both sides had half chances.  England's Reading goalkeeper Beth Storry made several good saves, including a block at the feet of the onrushing World Player of the Year Luciana Aymar.  Alex Danson, Storry's teammate at Reading, caused the World Champions problems of their own in the first period as she attacked down the right hand side.

England survived two penalty corners early in the second half with Leicester's Crista Cullen charging down the first and Hannah Macleod deflecting the second wide of Storry's goal.

When Argentina took the lead it was through an excellent piece of individual skill from Aymar, who cleverly eluded Helen Richardson's challenge before firing a powerful reverse stick shot low into the bottom corner.

Despite efforts to break down the Argentina defence, England could not capitalise on their second half possession.

In the final minute, England's best chance of the match fell to Clifton's Georgie Twigg who did well to control the ball at waist height from Alex Danson's cross.  Having taken the ball down, the 20 year turned onto her reverse but failed to get her shot off.

England now turn their attentions to Sunday's match against Korea, who drew 2-2 with China earlier in the day after surrendering a 2-0 lead.
