Danson's Deutsche Delight

A solitary goal from Alex Danson helped England to an important 1-0 win over rivals Germany in Pool D of the Rabo FIH Champions Trophy on Thursday afternoon.

The win, England's first of the tournament, puts them on four points, level with Australia at the top of the pool.

A quiet first half saw Germany enjoy the best of the chances, the clearest cut coming in the opening five minutes when Janine Beermann hit the base of the post after shooting across Beth Storry's goal.

England enjoyed the better of the second half possession and having fired a warning two minutes earlier, Reading forward Danson struck in the 50th minute to give England victory.  Picking up Hannah Macleod's threaded ball to the edge of the circle, Danson turned and slotted home under Yvonne Franks in the German goal.

From a series of three penalty corners England failed to extend their lead, while at the other end Germany could not find a way through the English defence despite three penalty corners of their own.

The result sets up a crucial 'Ashes' battle with Australia at 13:30 BST on Friday with the winner guaranteed to top Pool D and play off for fifth position.
