Day Two: Great Britain Super League

The second day of the Great Britain Hockey Super League saw yesterday’s winning teams from the men’s league meet each other.

Both Pennine Pumas and Saxon Tigers had big wins yesterday, 8-0 and 9-1 respectively so today’s tie was a mouth watering prospect.

The two sides battled out a 3-3 draw with the goal-scoring action starting in the third minute when Marc Edwards scored for the second day running to give Pennine the edge.

The Tigers soon clawed their way back into the game with a goal after 14 minutes but a Andy Bull strike gave Pumas the half time lead.

Tigers hit back again through Nick Bandurak to restore parity after 57 minutes but four minutes later Pennine came back with another goal, this time from David Flanagan.

With time running out, Saxon came back from the dead for a third time, with Tom Carson hitting another equaliser.

The two teams went searching for a decider for the remaining eight minutes but the game ended with honours even.

In the other match, the two losing teams from Saturday faced each other as Celtic Panthers met Caledonian Cougars.

Steve Kelly got Panthers off the mark after 13 minutes and the score remained 1-0 till half time. Panthers continued to apply pressure on the Cougars and eventually they succumbed to further goals from Rupert Shipperley, Morgan Harris and captain Mike Shaw.

Just before the final whistle, Craig Falconer hit back for Cougars but it was too little too late and they end the weekend with two defeats.

In the women’s league, it was a similar story with the losing teams from Saturday up against one another.

Caledonian Cougars ran out 3-0 winners with goals from Stephanie McInally, Louise Campbell and Hazel Hall.

Pennine Pumas are the early table toppers after their 3-0 defeat of Saxon Tigers gives them maximum points. The goals came from Shona McCallin, Lauren Turner and Giselle Ansley.
