National Schools Championships Review

The National Schools Championships for Boys, sponsored by Man, took place from 24-26 April at Cannock HC. Whitgift School U14s retained their title and achieve double victory with their U18s also clinching the title, Dean Close School U16s were also victorious.

In the U14s Whitgift successfully defended their title defeating RGS, High Wycombe 2-0 in the final with penalty corner goals in each half from Noah Francis and Josh Coniglio. In the U14 3-4 game Felsted played Rugby, a hat-trick from Rugby’s Sam Green-Armytage and one from Captain James Cutter sealed a 4-0 victory ensuring Rugby’s 3rd placed finished.

The U16 final was a battle between Simon Langton and Dean Close and it was Dean Close coming out 4-0 winners after goals from Ben West, Lloyd Evans, Jake Allen and Ian-Phillipp-Biedermann.  The U16 3-4 game was between Millfield and Ipswich, a hat-trick from Millfield’s Edward Horler and a single from Dylan Lacey secured the win for Millfield, Ipswich’s Monty Fin scored a late consolation goal, final score 4-1.

In the U18 competition South qualifiers Kingston and Whitgift both won their pools to set up a replay of the South final, after a goalless first half Whitgift opened the scoring through their captain Rob Farrington.  Kingston equalised two minutes later through their captain Jonny Gooch.  Harrison Sellers secured victory for Whitgift with a penalty stroke four minutes from time.  In the 3-4 game a penalty stroke barrage was needed after the game finished 1-1. Repton coming out on top 5-4.
