Mixed Finals Preview

This weekend sees the end of the Senior KO Competitions for 2011/12 as the Mixed Trophy & Plate comes to a conclusion with the Finals at Abbeydale Sports Club, home of Sheffield Hallam HC.

It is an unfamiliar line up in the Mixed Plate, which gets underway early Saturday morning, with three out of the four teams never making a final in this competition. Solihull Blossomfield are the only team with experience at this stage, winning the Mixed Plate in 2006, and they get proceedings underway when they take on Wallingford. Both teams were on fine scoring form in the last round to reach this stage, with Wallingford easing to a 5-0 win over Reigate Priory and Solihull Blossomfield winning 5-3 at Andover.

The second Plate Semi Final features two teams making their debut in the finals of this competition as Norwich City take on Barford Tigers. Norwich City have become the golden goal masters in this year’s Mixed Plate, having made it through the last three rounds by scoring that all important goal in extra time. Barford Tigers route to Sheffield was a little more comfortable than their counter parts, scoring an impressive 25 goals in just four matches.

The Mixed Trophy gets underway early afternoon with hosts Sheffield Hallam taking on Mixed Trophy specialists Phoenix. This will be the first time that the Yorkshire club has reached a final on home turf, having hosted the finals the previous two seasons and they will hope that the strong Sheffield crowd will cheer them to victory. They also defeated the current holders of the trophy when they knocked out Cannock in the last 16. Phoenix have been one of the major forces in Mixed hockey over the past few seasons, having won the Trophy in 2005, 2006 and 2008. They’ve made their way to the last four with ease, scoring 26 goals in their four victories.

The day finishes with the second trophy semi final with West Herts taking on Olton & West Warwicks. For West Herts, this is also their first appearance in the Mixed Finals and they will be on the road again, having won all five of their matches in this competition away from home. Like Phoenix, Olton & West Warwicks have been a big club in Mixed hockey over the years and they can boast winning the Mixed Trophy more than any other club, having claimed the top prize on five occasions. Their most recent success came in 2009 and they will be looking forward to another trip to Sheffield in an attempt to make it six trophy wins.
