U21 Volvo EuroHockey Championships

England National Age Group Squad

The Olympics might have been and gone but the international hockey is not yet over this summer. This weekend the next generation will get the chance to show that they're the stars of the future as England's U21 teams commence their Volvo EuroHockey Championships campaigns.

Both tournaments, for men and women, take place at Dutch club Den Bosch and England’s U21 men and women will harbour hopes of reaching the semi finals of the Volvo EuroHockey Championships, using the Championships as the springboard to Junior World Cup qualification in 2013.

At the 2010 EuroHockey Junior Nations Championships, England’s young men narrowly missed out on the medals after going down 4-3 to Germany in the bronze medal tie having come through their Pool fixtures behind eventual silver medalists Belgium. This time around England’s pool contains 2010 European Champions the Netherlands, France and British rivals Wales, newly promoted to the top flight for what will be an eagerly anticipated clash for both sides.

In the past month, the England U21 men have played a number of warm up series against Germany, Belgium and Spain. All three have been closely fought with Germany narrowly winning the most recent two match series 1-0, Belgium and England sharing the spoils in that two game test and Spain winning their best of three 2-1.

England’s U21 women are also targeting progression from the Pool into the semi finals and a guaranteed spot at the 2013 Junior World Cup. England’s women were the silver medal winners in 2010 after reaching the final before going down 4-1 to the Netherlands, who are the reigning junior World and European champions.  In Den Bosch, they will need to get the better of Spain, who won bronze in Lille two years ago, France and top flight newcomers Belgium to make the final four.

At the start of August, England’s U21 women beat Belgium in a three match series while they also got the better of France in a three match series in Kent back in  July. As well as Belgium and France, England’s women have recently pitted themselves against the Netherlands and Germany. While the reigning champion Dutch enjoyed the better of their two matches, things were closer between England and Germany, although Germany edged the series with 5-4 and 2-1 victories in addition to a 3-3 draw.

In order to qualify for the 2013 Junior World Cup both England sides will need to finish in the top six in Den Bosch.
