Beeston aiming to continue run of form

Simon Egerton, Beeston

Beeston will be aiming to continue their emphatic start to the season when they play hosts Hampstead and Westminster in the Men’s Hockey League Premier Division on Saturday.

Fifteen goals in their first two matches – and only three conceded, have put Beeston top of the early table with Simon Egerton having netted four goals in both their opening matches.

GB international Harry Martin looks set to make his first appearance for Beeston this weekend – in either the league on Saturday or the England Hockey Cup on Sunday – but the club are taking nothing for granted at Hampstead.

“Hampstead have been our bogey side for the last six or seven years,” said manager Graham Griffiths.

“It’s always a difficult place to go to. Something always seems to go wrong for us there, so we’re taking nothing for granted.

“We’ve been going really well so far, and Simon has been scoring plenty of goals. He keeps having dreams about how many he’s going to score, and so far he’s always done it. We keep asking him for the lottery numbers too!”

Elsewhere, reigning Champions Reading travel to Cannock with both sides having won one and lost one, while unbeaten East Grinstead entertain Brooklands MU, who are still searching for a first win.

Canterbury play host to Loughborough Students, while Southgate and Surbiton will both be searching for their first victory when they meet at Trent Park.

In the Men’s Conference West, Guildford are the only team with a 100 per cent record, and they travel to third-placed Cheltenham this Saturday.

Elsewhere, second-placed Fareham face a University of Exeter side who put four goals past Bristol Firebrands last weekend.

Khalsa (Warks) are still looking for their maiden win in the Men’s Conference North, and they take on former Premier Division outfit and current league leaders Bowdon this Saturday.

And leaders Wimbledon face Richmond this Saturday in the Men’s Conference East, while second-placed Cambridge City take on third-placed Holcombe.
