Unbeaten Canterbury prepare for Leicester challenge

Susie Townsend, Canterbury, 450

Canterbury play host to last season’s Champions Leicester in a clash of two unbeaten teams in the Investec Women’s Hockey League Premier Division at Polo Farm on Saturday.

Susie Townsend (pictured) will lead a team with some talented youngsters, but thinks that may give them an advantage.

“Matches against Leicester are always a bit of a grudge match,” she said. “Being at Polo Farm is a big advantage for us. We’ve got a lot of youngsters in our team who haven’t played Leicester before, so it may be a little bit daunting for them.

“But Leicester can’t prepare properly because they don’t know the players, so it should be interesting. We’ve been creating plenty of chances and were unlucky to draw last weekend, so we will be going for a win.”

Elsewhere, leaders Surbiton are the only team with a maximum points haul so far, and they will be aiming to continue their good run with a home clash against Bowdon Hightown, who welcomed back GB Olympian Sally Walton last weekend.

Meanwhile Clifton, who held Leicester to a 2-2 draw last weekend, entertain Sutton Coldfield.

Top of the table at the end of last season, Reading lie seventh after securing just a win and a draw in their opening three matches, but they will be aiming to boost their campaign when they take on strugglers Olton and West Warwickshire.

And University of Birmingham take on Slough with both sides looking to secure their first league win of the season.

In the Investec Women’s Conference West, leaders Buckingham have scored 13 goals in their opening three games and will be aiming to continue their free-scoring ways when they go to Barnes Hounslow Ealing.

Also unbeaten are Gloucester City, who face a trip to Swansea City on Saturday.

Former leaders Beeston lost top spot in the Investec Women’s Conference North to University of Durham in a 4-3 loss to the North East side last weekend, but they will be looking to hit back this Saturday when they entertain third-placed Brooklands Poynton.

Meanwhile, University of Durham go to Town Fields to play Doncaster in a bid to continue their three-match winning run.

The top two clubs in the Investec Women’s Conference East, unbeaten Harleston Magpies and second-placed Ipswich face each other this Saturday.

The only other unbeaten side in the league, fourth-placed Horsham will entertain Bromley and Beckenham.
