English Champions to face big European ties

Leicester captain Vanessa Hawkins lifts the Maxifuel Super Sixes Finals trophy

Last season’s Maxifuel Super Sixes Champions Leicester and East Grinstead have had their opponents unveiled for February’s EuroHockey Indoor Club competitions and both are in for a thriller of a weekend in Vienna.

Men’s champions East Grinstead go first in the NAVAX EuroHockey Indoor Club Trophy (15-17 February) and the East Sussex club will be looking forward to a Battle of Britain clash with Scottish side Grove Menzieshill on the Friday afternoon. Also in the pool with the EHL hosts are Portuguese side AD Lousada and HC Minsk of Belarus. EG must finish in the top two in their pool by Saturday lunchtime to have a chance of competing for the medals and promotion to the top division.

A week later Leicester ladies will arrive in the Austrian capital for European indoor hockey’s top tier, the EuroHockey Indoor Club Cup (22-24 February). Leicester won their place at the top table thanks to victory over Reading the 2012 Maxifuel Super Sixes Final at Wembley Arena and they would be hard pushed to find a tougher pool than the one they’ve been drawn in.  An opening tie with Spanish side Club de Campo, who finished fourth last year, is followed Gintra Strekte Uni of Lithuania (fifth in 2012) before an epic match against German champions Rot-Weiss Koln. In the 23 years since the tournament began there has never been a non-German winner of the gold medal.

Before then, both clubs will attempt to win their place in the 2014 competition by qualifying for and winning their respective 2013 Maxifuel Super Sixes Finals titles at Wembley Arena on Sunday 27th January. Tickets to see all the supercharged action at Wembley are available from www.ticketmaster.co.uk starting at £6 for U16s and £15 for adults.
