Canterbury prepare for Leicester challenge

Canterbury v Leicester 2012 - 450

BEING top of the table during the Winter break can give a vital psychological boost – and the leadership is up for grabs this weekend as the top two play each other in the Investec Women’s Hockey League Premier Division.

Canterbury visit Leicester on Saturday, and with just one point separating the teams the winner will be top of the table until the outdoor league resumes in February.

The Kent side are unbeaten so far this season, a run which includes a narrow 2-1 win over Leicester in early October (pictured). But they will be wary of their Midlands-based rivals who have won their last six consecutive matches, scoring 18 goals and conceding only three in the process.

But thoughts at Leicester are focused more on getting a seventh win, rather than going top of the table.

“From past experience when we’ve been top of the table at Christmas before, we’ve not done the business at the end of the season, said Leicester Manager Sue Holwell. “So it doesn’t make a difference to us, as long as we make it into the Championship play-offs.

“We’re looking forward to playing Canterbury. We didn’t play well and struggled to beat Clifton last weekend, but we had a couple of players out through illness who should return for Canterbury.”

And while the top two clubs play each other on Saturday, third-placed Surbiton travel to fourth-placed Bowdon Hightown, with both sides needing victory to ensure they stay in the top four places – vital for a place in the Championship play-offs and a crack at European spots later in the season.

Breathing down their neck in fifth spot are Reading, who turned on the style against bottom of the table Slough, winning 9-1 last weekend. They will be aiming for a similar result this Saturday when they travel to second-bottom Olton and West Warwickshire.

In other Investec Premier Division action this Saturday, Slough entertain the University of Birmingham, while Sutton Coldfield play host to Clifton.
