Australia have beaten England 2-0 in their quarter final match at the Champions Trophy in Melbourne.
One goal either side of half-time from Jamie Dwyer and Christopher Ciriello was enough to see the Kookaburas seal the victory and head through to a semi-final clash with the ever improving India.
England matched Australia in the first half and were unlucky to go a goal down after Loughborough Students' Henry Weir slipped in the circle allowing Jason Wilson to poach the ball and find Dwyer whose reverse stick shot bobbled up past a fast approaching George Pinner. The second half saw the Kookaburas settle in to their stride and with 17 minutes to go Ciriello powered a fast and accurate drag flick home to make it 2-0 and take his side through.
Speaking after the game England head coach Jason Lee said, “I thought we played a very solid game. Our lack of clinical circle play was the key difference between the two sides today and Australia took their chances well. Overall I was really pleased with the performance.”
England will now face Belgium in the 5th to 8th place matches at 21:30 UK time tomorrow night (Friday 7 December).
